The Pearl

John Steinbeck expresses many morals in his writing that involve illusions in every day life.
What does this quote reveal about greed?

"The news stirred up something infinentally black and evil in the town; the black distilate was like the scorpion, or like hunger in the smell of food, or like loneliness when love is withheld. The poison sacs of the town began to manufacture venom, and the town swelled and puffed with the pressure of it." P.23

I think it shows that the people of the town did'nt care about anyone, they would do almost anything to get what they want. They were displeased if someone had better something better than them.

I think greed presses down on people till they cannot bear it. Just as Steinbeck said.

Um, well that quote related to illusions and greed that was stirred up shows that the greed was there already, but it was under the surface creating an ILLUSION of peaceful harmany of the people when really there was this poisonous greed just sitting there. The whole town was an Illusion.

I don't really think that the town dosen't care about anybody, only that in the face of great wealth and power people will do whatever they need to, to get it.
